Picture this: waking up to the aroma of fresh homemade breakfast left on your front steps or just outside on the small, quaint table in the center of the authentically beautiful Greek courtyard. You sip on traditional Greek coffee and can’t even believe this is real life; with Airbnb, you’re not just booking a place to stay, you’re diving headfirst into the heart of Greek hospitality!

Section 1: Embracing Greek Hospitality in Traditional Villages, Like Mesaria

Mesaria, nestled in the heart of Santorini, was exactly what we envisioned when we booked our Airbnb. It’s just on the outskirts of town along the most beautiful cobblestone roads. Each door we passed on our walk into town was more beautiful than the last. It isn’t touristy at all, yet it has all the great amenities of a small town. Steps away from a local bakery that tempted us with an array of traditional Greek pastries, while nearby tavernas beckoned with promises of culinary delights straight from grandma’s kitchen.

There was a vibrant school and grocery store with all the staples you would need in case of an emergency. Ta Postalia tou Aigaiou is just under 15 minutes from our Airbnb. It was a wonderful place where you eat very well and with prices true to local Santorini life. The staff is not only pleasant but makes you feel like a friend or family. While we were there, we celebrated our anniversary and my husband’s birthday. The owner was kind enough to put candles on our dessert and sing Happy Birthday along with us. It was very sweet, and when we said goodbye on our last afternoon, we took this photo. It is a memory that I’ll never forget.

Section 2: Exploring Hidden Gems and Insider Secrets like the Santorini Wine Museum

Mesaria held more than just kindness and culinary delights – it was a gateway to Santorini’s hidden treasures. The Santorini Wine Museum was unexpected and provided a great history lesson on the island’s chronological journey of its winemaking evolution. Although we were there in October and the weather was perfect (we got lucky!), I can see this tour being perfect during the warmer months. Another great tip that helps in getting around the island a bit more efficiently is renting an ATV. It’s a game-changer!

Although we were chased by a scary pack of dogs one evening, and the temperatures were a little nippy most nights, the ease and convenience of having the ATV were so worth it. Keep in mind if you’re looking to rent a moped instead, you’ll need a motorcycle license to do so. We learned that little fun fact by accident from a local, but things worked out for the best because the ATV was much more comfortable.

Section 3: Connecting with Local Hosts and Community

One of the most enriching aspects of our stay in Mesaria was the opportunity to connect with locals and immerse ourselves in the vibrant community. One of the coolest and most unique experiences in Santorini was going to the Open Air Cinema in the town of Kamari. It was unlike anything I’ve ever seen before and such a treat. As we settled into our seats under the starlit sky, surrounded by locals and fellow travelers alike, we couldn’t help but feel a sense of excitement and anticipation. 

The feature film? “JOKER” starring Joaquin Phoenix – perhaps not the typical romantic film you’d expect to see in such a picturesque setting, but it turned out to be one of the most memorable movie nights. With the film playing in English with subtitles against a backdrop of lush, retro-inspired decor, the experience was unlike anything we had ever encountered before. It’s hard to put into words just how cool it was, but suffice it to say, it left a lasting impression on us. 

Looking for another great iconic spot in Santorini? Take a ride down along the southern most part of the island and explore The Black Sand Beaches. These iconic black sand beaches come fully loaded with all the beach essentials – think umbrellas for shade and cushy sunbeds to lounge on. Plus, you’ve got a bunch of beach bars and restaurants ready to keep you fueled and hydrated. And let me tell you, if you’re looking for some daytime fun and maybe a bit of a party scene, Perissa and Perivolos are where it’s at! Perivolos, especially, knows how to throw down with beach parties practically every day. They even bring in some big-name DJs from time to time, so you know the vibes are going to be electric. Whether you’re sipping cocktails poolside or soaking up the scene, you’ll feel the buzz of this lively atmosphere in every corner of these cosmopolitan beaches.

In the end, our time in Santorini wasn’t just about sightseeing or checking off bucket list items – it was about forging meaningful connections and creating lasting memories with the people who call this charming village home. Thanks to platforms like Airbnb, travelers like us have the opportunity to not only experience the beauty of Santorini but also to connect with its heart and soul in a way that truly enriches the travel experience.

When’s the best time to hit up Santorini?

Well, if you’re all about sunshine and beach vibes, you’ll want to plan your trip between June and September. That’s when the weather’s at its prime for soaking up those rays and unwinding by the sea. Just a heads up though, it’s also when prices are sky-high and the crowds are in full force. Personally, I’m all about avoiding the masses, so I opt for the shoulder seasons in May, June, September, and October.
